“Rebuilding Isabella with Post-Asbestos Solutions – The Morning Sun”

Deadline Approaching for Remodeling Proposals at Isabella County Administration Building

Time is running out for qualified architectural and engineering firms to submit bids to the Isabella County in preparation for the rebuilding of the administration building after asbestos abatement is completed. All bids must be received at Administrator Nicole Frost’s office by Thursday, 2 pm sharp.

The renovation and remodeling project will involve extensive analysis and design to bring parts of the building up-to-date. It all started back in October when a routine asbestos building material survey revealed that asbestos was present the fireproofing above ceiling tiles in three rooms.

As a result, Frost had to take immediate action and shut down the building, relocating all departments and employees while air quality testing was conducted. The first results indicated that the airborne levels of asbestos were below the “clean air” levels according to the OSHA standards. As a precaution, a second round of testing was done and four out of the thirty-one samples showed traces of the hazardous material.

The Asbestos Abatement project is now underway, with Quality Environmental Services of Beaverton, who won the bidding process, in the process of removing the substance from the building. The operation is expected to be completed by March 15.

As the building was constructed back in 1972 and covers an impressive 26,638 square feet, but includes many outdated construction features, the asbestos abatement presented an excellent opportunity for improvements. Thus, the county officials decided to pursue the full remodel/rebuild of the administration building, and are now in need of a firm to oversee the project.
